The Downtown Boy Everyone in Kashmir has a story to tell. The octogenarian has a tale to tell- he has seen towering South Asian leaders at best of their eloquence addressing hundreds of thousands in the Muslim Park and in our own Red Square. The septuagenarian has his stories to tell about the royal river procession and Russian Communist leaders in majestic boats rowed through the Jhelum. As, I was leaving my mother’s lap, that warm hug, where evil could not harm me and learning to waddle with watangour- walker, toddling and stumbling at every step, lots of changes were taking place– changes that were bringing down the towers of Ilium, hubris and hegemony. Learning Kashmir History in an Open University
It was the other day, when heavy rainfall had turned the sluggish Jhelum into a raging torrent; I was one amongst a hundred and odd people who had waded their way to sparkling white hall of a local hotel. The occasion was release of a book on chief minister, Omar Abdullah by a young journalist Arjmand Hussein Talib. Sitting in the hall, waiting for the VIP to unwrap the book on a scion of Abdullah family, I was reminded of learning my first lessons on Kashmir politics.
