Agonized Story of Kashmir Women

Trapped in inertia and choked for years Kashmir writers   have broken their silence. They have started telling their story- telling it boldly. “He who writes his story; Inherits the land of that story, wrote years back great Palestine poet Mahmud Darwish. That Kashmiris are yet to tell their story- truthful story to the world has been an overwhelming grouse with the common people.  Like many others, I also craved for having our own literature in the vein of internationally recognized, ‘Palestine Literature’- a literature that ‘takes its testimony from the place it is born- ‘a literature written within a specific historical context- a context which may be immediately situated within the contemporary struggle.’ There can be no denying, many important European and Americans historians, writers and novelists during past sixty year … Read entire article »

Poor Kashmir Chief Ministers

I have no incisive study of the governance in the state. The state administration has not been what in journalistic parlance is termed as ‘my beat’.  If the state is governed badly or very badly or governance in the state is conspicuous by its absence, I cannot say with absolute authority.  That I believe is the domain of the “Peter Duckers” in the media. However, to my understanding the governance in the state cannot be delinked from its larger political narrative.   On October 30, 1947, New Delhi installed Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah as the first chief administrator; on August 9, 1953, it dismissed Abdullah and placed Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad   in the saddle. Towards the close of 1963, in New Delhi’s estimation Bakshi lost his utility, like his predecessor in office  … Read entire article »

Saga of Kashmir Failures- Is Hurriyat Conference Dying?

Saga of Kashmir Failures- Is Hurriyat Conference Dying?

It has been an enigmatic story that of birth with a bang and death with a whimper.  In our state political organizations wither away much before they realize their political objectives but irrespective of their melting down political sentiments that these organizations articulate survive… The melting starts as and when   the political organizations   fail to synchronize their political stand with that of the popular political sentiment. My belief is grounded in the seventy-one year political history … Read entire article »

Kashmiris Are A Brave Nation

I have come to believe as people we are naïve. Our earlier leadership was naïve. Our contemporary leadership is not a shade better than the old crop. Moreover naivety’ is our “tragic flaw.”It has been but for this ‘tragic flaw’ that despite offering heroic resistance against any kind of colonization – minds or territory, people have been landing in the troubled waters and the morasses of uncertainties. The story of Kashmir- your story and my story has been that of valor and courage. On all-important junctures of our history, we have risen in revolt against the desperadoes and fought battles against the usurpers. Historically, it would be unjust to believe that this nation has been accepting cruelty, intimidation and terror as its destiny. I see some ‘commentators’ singing in sync with … Read entire article »

Kashmir Leaders Engagment With Ram Jethmalani

Kashmir Leaders Engagment With Ram Jethmalani

Ours is not an arid land. Therefore, there are no natural dust storms. However, it needs no gusty wind to cause a political storm in our state. So much of political dust has gathered during past sixty-three years that even a visit-with-purpose by political leader from New Delhi is sufficient, if not cause a storm but raise the dust. One such recent visit was by a former Kashmir Committee Chairman, B.J.P leader and leading lawyer … Read entire article »

Deconstructing Kashmir Narrative

Is our narrative outlandish, irrational and unfounded bordering on conspiracy theory? Are we truly paranoid people? These questions bothered me at a recent seminar broadly   organized by Kashmir University and attended by a battery of teachers of political science from within and outside the State.  The broad subject for seminar was finding solution to Kashmir problem within framework of Indian Constitution. In this column, sometime back I wrote that it is encouraging that Kashmir University of late is coming out of the academic inertia by striding across hitherto forbidden turfs – such as discussing the future of Kashmir. But largely so for, these discussions  have been conforming to the ‘dominant discourse’ and ‘official narratives’. Noam Chomsky in his essay, ‘the function of the university in a time of crises,’ has rightly … Read entire article »
